“Brexit Breaker” Ulster Canal Greenway extension launched

Transport Minister Shane Ross described the major extension to the Greenway “a Brexit-breaker”. Minister Heather Humphreys was also present on Monday 11th September at the launch of the major upgrade of the Ulster Canal Greenway in County Monaghan.

The route around Monaghan town will be extended towards Smithborough in one direction and to the North, Middletown in County Armagh. The project will cost €4.95 million and according to the head of Waterways Ireland, the lead partner behind the project, it has tremendous potential to bring in visitors and boost the economy of the region.

Minister Ross: “This is a wonderful initiative. It’s a particularly special greenway because it is a cross-border initiative. Anything that brings different traditions together is special for this government. The timing is interesting because we do not know what will happen about Brexit. So it is tremendous to see things opening up…
